The Whimsical Drawings of @khiesti

Kerstin Hiestermann’s (@khiesti) minimalistic, playful and sometimes odd drawings are proof that, as she asserts, the child in her is still alive. By laying real objects on white paper and adding simple black line drawings, she brings new worlds to life.

Kerstin, an elementary school teacher, pulls inspiration from all around her. “Flowers, plants, food, things from my work and sometimes a word that someone says to me or a question my son asks me. I often see worlds in little things. There is a flower and I see a giraffe, there is a toy dinosaur and I think, ‘see an exploding lilac.”

“Instagram is my ignition,” says Kerstin. “I love the interaction with all the people all over the world, the inspiration, the mindfulness. I think without Instagram I would never have come to this idea and I would never know how much creativity is inside me.”

Be sure to view more of Kerstin’s wonderful, whimsical drawings on Instagram at @khiesti.

Spotlight: Melbourne

Since launching, we’ve seen Instagram spread from our headquarters in the Bay Area to every corner of the globe. In this series, Spotlight, we’ll highlight top users from countries and cities with thriving Instagram communities.

The city of Melbourne—Victoria’s capital and the second most populous city in Australia—was deemed the most livable city in the world two years in a row, causing a plethora of artists to move into the city’s limits. Due to the ever-changing skyline’s modern, cutting-edge designs and its diverse, historical architecture there is never a shortage of photographic inspiration.

Want to view Melbourne from an insider’s perspective? We put together a list of some amazing Instagrammers from in and around the city.

  • Kamil Sharaidin, Malaysian architect and photographer living in Melbourne— @kamilsharaidin
  • Farrah Allan, wedding photographer — @farrahallan
  • Stephanie Stamatis, stylist and designer with an affinity for rustic greenery — @stephanie_somebody
  • Cleo Coppinger, model and photographer documenting her day-to-day adventures — @cleocoppinger

To explore the city in depth, you can also browse the location pages for some of Melbourne’s more popular landmarks:

  • The Arts Center, known for its easily recognizable and iconic spire
  • Federation Square, a civic center and structure with unique and beautiful architecture
  • Eureka Skydeck 88, the highest public vantage point—285 meters (935 feet)—in the southern hemisphere.
  • Melbourne Cricket Ground, the tenth-largest stadium in the world, the largest in Australia, and the largest stadium for playing cricket.

The World’s Most Beautiful Museums

“In poetically well built museums, formed from the heart’s compulsions, we are consoled not by finding in them old objects that we love, but by losing all sense of Time.” - Orhan Pamuk

In honor of International Museum Day, we assembled a list of our favorite museums around the world. Museums house the world’s treasures—be they artistic, scientific or historical—and in turn they are often designed to reflect or enhance the collections they host.

See more museum photos from across the Instagram community by browsing the location pages for these museums below.

Cycling around the World with @roblutter

In 2011, Rob Lutter (@roblutter) said goodbye to his family, friends and life in London and set off on a 30,000 km cycling tour around the world. He took only a tent, bike, SLR camera and iPhone with him.

Four months later while hiding from a cold winter in a Turkish hostel, Rob discovered Instagram. “Until that point I’d been shooting only on my Canon. I’d missed so many shots because I was too slow to grab the SLR or because the subject was gone before I could get it out,” he says. “As I waited for spring in that hostel, with thousands of photos to go through, I realised that it was going to take a seriously long time to get these pictures out to people. Then I came across Instagram.”

When spring came and Rob hit the road again, he began using Instagram to share scenes from his travels. He biked out of Europe, across the Middle East, up and over the Himalayas, and through the deserts of Western China. During the hardest parts of his journey, Rob says the Instagram community helped him make it through. “The support from people around the world was incredible. Messages of encouragement would arrive every other day and there were times when I’d cycle longer and further just to reach a town in an attempt to get some Wi-Fi, to connect to Instagram! It became a positive obsession of mine.”

Two years into his journey, Rob has cycled over 15,000 km, crossed 21 borders, and raised £2000 for Water Aid. He’s now in Hong Kong preparing to head to Australia for the next leg of the trip. To tune into the rest of his journey, be sure to follow him on Instagram @roblutter and visit his website.

Exploring the Sapporo Snow Festival (さっぽろ雪まつり)

Want to see more photos of the festival? Visit the 大通公園 (Odori Park), つどーむ, and すすきの location pages.

The city of Sapporo in northern Japan has hosted its weeklong snow festival every year since 1950. The first festival had only six participants––local high school students who built six modest snow statues in Odori Park. Now, millions of people visit the festival to view over 200 elaborate snow statues and ice sculptures. Often the statues depict notable events, places or people from the previous year. This year, there are replicas of Thailand’s Wat Bendamabophit Temple, Taipei’s Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and Japan’s Kabuki-za Theater, as well as sculptures of anime characters Hatsune Miku, Kasane Teto and Sekka Yufu.
